Anna Maksymenko Is the Junior European Vice-Champion: Day Two Results at the 2026 Junior European Fencing Championships
How the Ukrainians fared February 25 at the 2026 Junior European Fencing Championships.
18-year-old fencer Anna Maksymenko brought Ukraine its first medal of the 2026 Junior European Championships, held in Tbilisi, Georgia. It happened on the continental championship's second competition day, when the two-time tournament champion won silver in épée.
Earlier, on the first competition day, the top Ukrainian finisher was épée fencer Maksym Hula, who stopped one step short of the podium in the quarterfinal.
In total, the competition runs February 24–27. Ukraine is represented at the tournament by junior men and women in all three weapons — épée, sabre, and foil.
Results From Day Two of the 2026 Junior European Fencing Championships for Ukraine
- This year's Euro gold medalist, Anna Maksymenko, opened the competition with five pool wins, earning the ninth seed. After beating five more opponents in the playoffs, the athlete reached the final, where she faced Latvia's Sofija Prosina. But her opponent managed to win by a margin of two touches. With that, Maksymenko became the 2026 Junior European Championships' silver medalist, bringing Ukraine its first medal of this year's tournament.
- Three more Ukrainian women competed in the individual épée event alongside Anna. Fourth seed Alina Dmytruk's run ended in the round of 16, while Mariia Sereda and Emily Konrad were eliminated in the round of 32.
- In the junior men's foil event, Yanislav Koretskyi and Daniil Matiash stopped one step short of the round of 16, finishing 28th and 26th, respectively. Artem Korzhovyi-Lerner lost to a Russian athlete in the round of 32 by a margin of seven touches, and Andrii Simonov's run ended at the same stage of the tournament.
- Among the Ukrainians in the junior men's sabre event, Daniil Skorokhod finished highest, in 21st place. Dmytrii Zahrebelnyi and Oleksii Ataian were eliminated in the round of 32.

The 2026 Junior European Fencing Championships' team events begin Thursday. February 26, in particular, will feature the junior men's épée team event and the junior women's sabre and foil team events.
