Rebecca Yarros's Fourth Wing: What We Know About the Series Adaptation
Prime Video is developing a TV adaptation of Rebecca Yarros's novel Fourth Wing.
The success of Rebecca Yarros's novel Fourth Wing on BookTok led to a screen adaptation — the book made the top of The New York Times and Amazon charts, as well as general US bestseller lists. But due to the lack of many officially confirmed details about the series, online discussion has centered around existing statements and scattered hints from the creators.
What's Officially Known About the Fourth Wing Adaptation
The series adaptation is currently in development and pre-production — Prime Video hasn't yet announced an official start date for filming or a release date for the series. That said, observers predict that, given the current stage of development, filming likely won't begin before late 2026, with a premiere in 2027 or later.
Wednesday season two producer Meredith Averill is working on the adaptation as showrunner. The project was previously led by Moira Walley-Beckett, known for her work on Breaking Bad and for creating Anne with an E.
The Series' Casting
As of mid-February 2026, Prime Video hasn't confirmed any actors for the Fourth Wing series. Author Rebecca Yarros, for her part, isn't offering her own casting picks, so as not to influence the producers' decisions or create premature expectations among fans. This caution from the studio explains why an official cast hasn't been announced yet.
Rebecca Yarros said in 2024 that she'd never say who she thinks would make the ideal fan-cast, since the fandom's picks are so diverse, and she wants to leave room for even more diversity, she noted.
Even so, the fan community keeps discussing possible casting choices. In particular, British actor Danny Griffin is seen as a potential pick to play Liam Mairi. Griffin played the character Sky in the Netflix fantasy series Fate: The Winx Saga, and has also appeared in The Gentlemen, Revenge Never Pays, and The Free Throne.
The Plot of Fourth Wing
The Fourth Wing book series, also known as The Empyrean, takes place in the fantasy kingdom of Navarre, where young people train at the military college Basgiath to become dragon riders capable of defending the country. The school runs on a 'graduate or die' principle: the trials are deadly, and competition among cadets is brutal.
At the center of the story is Violet Sorrengail, a frail twenty-year-old whose mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, forces her to give up her dreams and join the dragon riders. Because of her physical limitations, the protagonist has to overcome not just deadly trials, but the other cadets' prejudice as well.
During her journey, Violet bonds not with one, but with two dragons at once — the black dragon Tairn and the golden dragon Andarna. She also meets Xaden Riorson, a third-year cadet whose father was involved in a rebellion against Violet's mother. A tense, and later romantic, connection develops between the two.
